NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY – London

This gallery offers a prestigious collection of portraits of people from all ages from all walks of life. It is a fascinating collection but one that many pass by without fully grasping what delights it contains and what insights it can give to our past, present and future.

We began running workshops here in 2008 based on taking groups of visitors round on a guided themed tour of the galleries, introducing them to different characters through story-telling and role play and art activities. This programme encouraged people to view the pictures more closely, understand how and why the sitter had been posed in a certain setting or with certain artefacts and see links between different pictures.
